Named after the Italian town Bergamo in northern Italy, Bergamot oil is expressed from the rind of ripe bergamot fruit, a green ornamental citrus fruit which turns yellow when ripe. The oil produces a mild and gentle citrusy odor which is commonly used in eau de colognes. Though the plant is native to tropical Asia, it is largely grown in Reggio de Calabria Italy. It is also interesting to note that Bergamot leaves are used in Earl Grey tea.
Bergamot essential oil has a cooling and refreshing effect which may aid in uplifting negative emotions such as anger, melancholy or grief.
